Laurel telling Domenick about Desiree’s plan

Laurel has been sitting between the Malolo alliance and the Naviti alliance for awhile now, and this episode finally showed where her true loyalty lies. Although she could have worked with Desiree and the Malolos to get rid of Kellyn, Domenick, and Wendell, Laurel decided to side with Dom and Wendell because she trusts them more. With ten people still left in the game, trust is a rare and valuable thing. Laurel may have to betray Dom and Wendell eventually, but making a move against them this episode would have been too early.

Domenick convincing Kellyn to vote out Desiree

Since Dom voted out his arch nemesis Chris, he’s shown a more patient, thoughtful side that has allowed him to calmly assess situations without paranoia getting the better of him. In this episode, Dom correctly intuited that Laurel was telling the truth, and then managed to convince Kellyn, despite her protests, to vote out her closest ally. Had he not stuck to his guns, Naviti would still have a traitor in their midst, which would have caused a lot of problems down the line.

Donathan finding both halves of the idol

Finding idols sometimes looks really easy on Survivor, but securing the second half of the Scot/Tai idol that was under the shelter looked quite difficult. Donathan played it beautifully by patiently waiting for people to leave the shelter, then recruiting his allies to help him unearth the idol. Now, he has more power in this game when he doesn’t even necessarily need it in the near future.

Kellyn refusing to acknowledge Desiree’s betrayal

Kellyn has had a good read on the game so far, but this episode she showed a huge blind spot when it came to her ally Desiree. She refused to trust Laurel’s information about Desiree and didn’t even want to entertain the possibility that Desiree could betray her. Because Kellyn is a loyal ally herself, she assumes her other allies are just as loyal. However, she’s become a little complacent in her position of power, and having a little more paranoia and a “don’t trust anyone” attitude would serve her well going forward.

Kellyn threatening Domenick

When Dom confronted Kellyn about Desiree, Kellyn at first refused to believe him. Then, she threatened him by suggesting that he needs to vote out a man (Michael) because she doesn’t want him and Wendell to have too much power. Although she did ultimately decide to believe Dom and vote out Desiree, Kellyn’s mishandling of the situation showed Domenick that she may not be the trustworthy ally he thought she was.

Desiree betraying Kellyn

Although Desiree’s idea to vote out Kellyn wasn’t bad per se, there were three problems with it: first, it was too early. Does she really think that betraying her former allies this early will allow her to make it to the end of the game? Second, if she made it to the end, there’s no way she would get the jury votes of the former Naviti allies she betrayed. Third, it didn’t even seem that she’s consulted with Chelsea and Angela ahead of time, so she was really going out on a limb by offering to work with the Malolos. The move was poorly executed, and it obviously blew up in her face.
